In
1997, after a request from a customer, Sherry Shanbom created a unique line of
personalized silverware for babies and children (and adults soon!) Shanbom
founded Name That Spoon Because she knew there was a demand for personalized baby gifts
that would last a lifetime. Shanbom has been the topic of many newspaper articles
and has appeared on television and on the radio. Here's what The Detroit News had to
say...
Sherry Shanbom's 2-year-old son Cory may not have been born with a
silver spoon in his mouth, but he knows fine dining utensils when he sees them.
"I put two spoons in front of him - one plain and one with
his name and beads on it - and his eyes immediately were attracted to the more
personalized one," said Shanbom, owner of Name That Spoon, a company specializing in
silverware for tots. "They are just totally different and eyecatching to
children and adults".
The mother and entrepreneur started the business with
about $500 last year after a friend asked her to put her child's name on a small spoon.
Since then, the company has sold more than 700 silverware
sets to several customers and seven stores, including one in Beverly Hills, CA.
Customer Jane Loch of Huntington Woods, MI has bought
three of the three-piece sets for gifts.
"I mainly like these sets because it's something
children can actually use and save as a momento forever", said Loch, mother of two
children. "It's a great gift because you're giving kids something of their
own".
The handmade silverware sets are designed for either
newborns or children 1-9 years old. They are available in stainless, silverplate or
sterling silver with silver antique beads, aluminum spirals and colorful antique accent
beads for $25 to $125.
"Many of my customers are concerned with giving the
same typical baby gifts," Shanbom said. "Clothes you forget, but these are
keepsakes. You could pass these down from one generation to the next".
"It's a heirloom and showpiece. Some people
don't even use them, they just display them."
